Open Studio with Pusi Urale

Drop by the Learning Centre to meet the wonderful Samoan artist Pusi Urale, who began painting when she was 50. Now in her 80s, she is a well-respected in the art community and an inspiration to all. Her painting style is uplifting with an exuberant Pacific colour palette which embraces her multicultural concepts of people,  place and identity. Decorate a small canvas with bright colours while learning specialist pointillism techniques. As part of the Mafine exhibition in our Learning Cenre Gallery, this free drop-in family workshop is open to everyone and we know Pusi will help encourage you to engage in art.

Open Studio: Theo Schoon

Create your own special gourd print, inspired by Theo Schoon’s intricately carved gourds and the Māori legend about Hine-pu-te-hue, the daughter of Tane and ataua (goddess) of peace who helped to diffuse the anger of the gods after the separation or Ranginui and Papatuanuku. Start with embossing a foam plate with an outline of a gourd shape to fill with your own unique designs to ink up and print from.

ADULT studio WORKSHOP SERIES

Painting Workshop with Pusi Urale

Join us for a fun workshop experience designed for a senior audience with the super talented 81-year-old Samoan artist, Pusi Urale, as it is never too late to pick up a paint brush and give it a go. This class is designed for beginners to decorate a summer tote bag using fabric paint. While you’re here, view Pusi’s vibrant exhibition called Mafine which is a celebration of colour, female form and Polynesian patterns. Her enthusiasm is infectious so come along to learn some exciting techniques to get you started on your own creative journey.

Inspire Series

Join us for an exclusive tour of the Portage Ceramic Awards, viewing over 50 amazing ceramic sculptures, then create a small 3D vessel to decorate with acrylic patterns. Learn basic hand-building skills such as pinch pot, coil techniques and texturing. Enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles while you get creative. (Note: we will be using unfired paper clay).
