Te Uru Totes are produced by Ecobagsnz, who are fully certified to sell Fairtrade Cotton products in Australia and New Zealand. Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on partnerships between producers and consumers. Ecobagsnz’s jute and cotton factories also hold certification from Sedex, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to driving improvements in ethical and responsible business practices.
Te Uru is the regional gallery for Hikurangi-West Auckland. We have a distinctive local focus but a national and international perspective. As a destination gallery, Te Uru operates from an award-winning purpose-built building, which opened in 2014. The gallery originally began in 1986 as the Waitemata City Arts and Cultural centre, later known as Lopdell House Gallery, sited next door in the historic Lopdell House building in Titirangi, gateway to the Waitakere Ranges and Auckland's famous west coast beaches.
Our name, Te Uru, makes reference to Te Hau a Uru, the wind that blows from the west, a powerful characteristic of the area and an important story for local iwi, Te Kawerau ? Maki. The west wind shares the messages and vision of the people that live in the west, brings change, sets direction and influences the region. This is represented in our branding, which has a fresh, floating quality, aligned to communicate from the west, across the mountaintops of the Great Forest of Tiriwa.
