"My love of ordinary things is the basis of my art" Marie Shannon, 1997
This exhibition presents a survey of Marie Shannon's work over the last decade. It provides an opportunity to experience the development and changes in the artist's work over time, and to examine and consider her recurring themes and ideas.
In an exhibition titled Sculpture by Marie Shannon at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in 1993/94, Shannon described herself as a sculptor. This assertive and surprising declaration is in keeping with the development of her work as she constantly shifts the boundaries of her practice. Marie Shannon's work has always been acutely personal; through details of her own life, she examines contemporary practice and what it is to be an artist.
