In response to the exhibition Split Level View Finder, which highlights Theo Schoon’s work with gourds, sound artist Kingsley Spargo explores the sonic possibilities of gourds, shells and other Pacific materials. In a free gallery performance developed especially for Te Uru and presented as part of the Titirangi Festival of Music, he combines delicate acoustic instruments with new technologies including loops, echoes and textures, to present an immersive soundscape.
Kingsley Spargo’s broad sound palette is both captivating and evocative. Drawing across theatre, free improvised and contemporary music, his recent works include composing and performing Only Ocean with Courtney Sina Meredith and Black Grace for the Guerrilla Collection, featured on Eve de Castro Robinson’s award-winning album ‘Gristle of Knuckles’, and performances with Aotearoa New Zealand literary giant Witi Ihimaera. Other collaborators have included visual artists Philip Tse, Alvin Xiong, poet Kim Meredith and contemporary composers Alan Brown, SJD, Don McGlashan and Tim Finn. His debut album Chasing Spirits was released in 2019 to critical acclaim.
