SUPERFLEX: Copy Light silent auction

A silent auction will be held at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery for the sale of SUPERFLEX Copy Light lamps on Saturday 10th December from 5-8pm, as part of the Lopdell Precinct Twilight Christmas Market event in Titirangi Village. Te Uru will be open late, presenting the lamps in a final collective display for the auction, and Te Uru’s gallery shop will also have a one-night-only discount to support the event. All proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit organisation defending civil liberties in the digital world.

Initiated by artist group SUPERFLEXCopy Lights are cube shaped lamps made of wood and translucent paper with photocopied motifs of well-known lamp designs. As part of the recent exhibition On Repeat: The Disruptive Copy at Te Uru, participants were invited to construct their own Copy Lights over a series of Copy Light Factory workshops, in which the lamps were assembled and installed to collectively illuminate the exhibition space. Workshop participants were free to change the image to a lamp design of their choosing, thus these Copy Lights seek the borders between the copy and the original. As a copy of a copy, Copy Lights turn into something new: an original lamp that helps communicate the problems of the current copyright system.

Copy Light Factory was first developed in the context of Copyshop for Artspace, Auckland in 2005.
