from the shore: screening programme

BARRY BARCLAY
The Kaipara Affair, director’s cut (195 mins)
The Kaipara Affair, Barclay’s provocative yet often lyrical examination of the threat posed to the Kaipara Harbour by rapacious commercial fishing and development, is the work of a man who took his time. Barclay lived for almost three years in the small settlement of Tinopai on the harbour’s north side, getting to know the story he wanted to tell and winning the confidence of the people he needed to talk to.

Ng?ti (93 mins)
Set in and around the fictional town of Kapua in 1948, Ng?ti is the story of a M?ori community. The film comprises three narrative threads: a boy, Ropata, is dying of leukaemia; the return of a young Australian doctor, Greg, and his discovery that he has M?ori heritage; and the fight to keep the local freezing works open. Unique in tone and quietly powerful in its storytelling, Ng?ti was Barry Barclay’s first dramatic feature, and the first feature to be written and directed by M?ori.

Patu! (113 mins)
Merata Mita’s Patu! is a startling record of the mass civil disobedience that took place throughout New Zealand during the winter of 1981, in protest against a South African rugby tour.
