Following on from Kerry Ann Lee’s commissioned project Life shoud be simple and good, Te Uru is delighted to present a series of workshops and talks that consider how local artists find creative inspiration working with the most familiar of materials.

WORKSHOP: ISOBEL THOM

Join Isobel Thom and view her incredible geometric clay vessels currently exhibited here in the exhibition Pocket Histories. Thom’s ceramic objects and forms connect with natural ecological systems, regenerative design and permaculture. She will demonstrate how to make a geometric clay vessel/planter form using thin slabs of leather hard clay. You will be able to have a go making your own clay rectangular vessel using unfired clay which we will donate to the ever-growing exhibition in the Learning Centre Gallery instigated by Kerry Ann Lee. During the session we will discuss the versatility and potential of clay as a media and what inspires/drives Isobel to create such unique work.

DROP-IN WORKSHOP: KOHL TYLER-DUNSHEA

Kohl Tyler-Dunshea is an Auckland-based artist who works with a variety of mediums, but is particularly known for her watercolour paintings. In 2017, she was the first place recipient of the Estuary Art and Ecology Awards, and also collaborated with footwear company Merchant1948 to produce Kohl for Isabella Anselmi, a line of footwear which showcases exclusive watercolour textile designs. Join Kohl to create a small botanical drawing to place within the Learning Centre Gallery exhibition.

ARTIST TALK: PHILLIP FICKLING

Come and meet Phillip Fickling, a paper engineer who creates extraordinary pop-up books and sculptures. You might be familiar with his pop-up books SWELL: The Art of Judy Millar written by Trish Gribben and The House That Wonky Built illustrated by Katz Cowley. He is highly skilled at creating incredible feats in card and paper that bring book illustrations to life.
