Curator tour: Picturing Asia with Ian Wedde

Exhibition curator Ian Wedde discusses the work of Brian Brake and Steve McCurry in our exhibition, Picturing Asia: Double Take, co-presented by Auckland Arts Festival and Te Uru. Picturing Asia: Double Take pairs and contrasts the work of New Zealander Brian Brake (1927-1988), and American Steve McCurry (born 1950).

Ian Wedde (ONZM) is a poet, novelist, critic and curator. His work as an art critic led him to curate a number of key exhibitions and work as the head of art and visual culture at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa from 1994 until 2004. His poems appear in numerous journals and anthologies, and in 16 poetry collections. He has also written several novels, books of essays, art catalogues, monographs on Bill Culbert and Judy Millar, and has written texts for books by photographers including Peter Black, Lucien Rizos and Anne Noble. He was awarded an Arts Foundation Laureate Award in 2006, was the 2011-2013 Poet Laureate for New Zealand, and in 2014 was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement (poetry).
