Portage Ceramic Awards 2002

This is the second year that the Portage Ceramic Awards have been staged, with the generous sponsorship of the Portage Charitable Foundation. The award has re-established ceramics as an integral part of New Zealand’s contemporary arts platform and the exhibition of finalists celebrates the richness and diversity of contemporary ceramics around the country.

This years judge, Australian Michael Keighery, is former President of the Crafts Council of Australia, Senior lecturer at the University of Western Sydney and founder of the Centre for Ceramic Research. His eclectic approach incorporates a respect for the traditions of ceramics and an enthusiastic use of relevant new technologies. “Ceramics should be provocative and relevant to when and where we live.” – Keighery, 2002
